University Challenge!

Five university students have decided to generously raise money for SPW by cycling 4,200 miles across the United States this summer.  Their journey begins on the 12^th of July in San Francisco, and continues on for 69 days ending in New York City.  The total distance that they will cover is equivalent to the diameter of Mars!  Their route will take them through some of America’s most extreme terrain, including the Nevada desert, the U.S. Route 50, nicknamed “the Loneliest Road in America,” and the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains, regarded by cyclists as some of the most difficult stretches of the route. 

A few of the dynamic bunch have undertaken some pretty adventurous challenges in the past such as cycling from the Isle of Wight to the Isle of Skye, climbing Mount Fiji in Japan and climbing Mount Chirripo in Costa Rica.  However, because this journey encompasses a wide range of challenges such as varying altitudes, harsh desert heat, possible sandstorms, and extremely long stretches without food or service stations, it will be a first for them all. Additionally, the group are looking for students from American universities to join them in this challenge by raising awareness about SPW and issues affecting young people in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, and also by encouraging them to join the cycle tour as it journeys through their home State.
